U inventors win TCIP grant awards
University of Utah startups and researchers won 11 second-round grants in December through the Technology Commercialization and Innovation Program (TCIP) — a state grant and mentoring program developed by the Utah Legislature in 1986 to help accelerate the commercialization of cutting-edge technologies created at Utah’s colleges and universities.
The U winners included: Actiont, ADD.it, Susan Bock, Kenneth Eddington, Heavystone Laboratories, Granite Mountain Technologies, Metallosensors, Navigen, Jacqueline Siy-Ronquillo, US Bio-Remediation and Viropan.

Student idea, biz competition results
Student competitions techTITANS and the U of Utah Opportunity Quest concluded recently. Winners of techTITANS, an idea competition, included: 1, Dolly Holt, U of Utah; 2, Michael Sanders, Mark Robers, BYU; Impact Award, Nick Whatcott, Westminster; greenTITAN first place, Caitlin Jolley, Westminster. Winners of Opportunity Quest, a business summary competition, included: 1, EMRID Technologies; 2, Ligadon; 3, IB-Tape.

Utah FIRST LEGO League growing
Forty-eight teams and hundreds of spectators attended the second annual Utah FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Championship at the University of Utah on Jan. 28. FLL is a national LEGO robotics and innovation program for kids ages 9-14. Technology Venture Development is the Utah partner for the program. In Utah, it grew from 60 teams and one tournament in January 2011 to 150 teams, nine qualifying tournaments across the state and the championship in January 2012.

U startups Navigen, Veritract partner
University of Utah startup Navigen recently signed a management-services agreement with Veritract, Inc. Through this arrangement, Navigen will provide management and business support to Veritract, a recently financed, U startup developing an innovative, visually-guided, steerable feeding tube.

Tech Ventures staff win awards
Two Technology Venture Development staff members earned professional awards recently. Jack Brittain, v.p. for Technology Venture Development, won the Daniels Fund Leadership in Ethics Award from the David Eccles School of Business. Ronald Weiss won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists. Weiss manages faculty outreach for Technology Venture Development.
